For my love, Davalyn. One of the preliminary face sketches I came up with for the heroine of her graphic novel… I think she looks like she’s pretty sure someone’s about to do something stupid.

Progress shot of what I’m painting right now… proof that I don’t have idle hands (at least not most of the time!). I’m taking pains not to over refine this. As I said in my last post, my work— especially the face— tends to lose life the closer I get to finishing, so the end product is like a wax figure. I want to capture an emerging fire and determination in her eyes… I’m hoping it will show more as I add wrinkles, shadows, highlights, etc. Her hair is white/silver, which is going to be a pain in the ass, but I’m looking forward to the challenge!

Several people have told me they like my unfinished art better than my finished work… which pisses me off a little because, obvs, by the time it’s finished, I’ve spent some of my life blood working on it, yeah?

But I guess I slave over stuff so much and get caught up in perfection and whatnot that I manage to suck the life out of my work. Which I understand…  if I look at my art without personal involvement, I guess my roughs are more engaging. But how do I find a middle ground between sketch and finished product? I don’t want to paint wax figures anymore. :(
